NHCLC Leadership, Dr. Reyes, Rev. Salazar to participate in national conference on Science and Faith

The Religion and Public Life Program (RPLP) at Rice University has invited Dr. Gus Reyes, COO of the NHCLC and Director of the Christian Life Commission for Texas Baptists, and Rev. Girien Salazar, Executive Director of the Faith and Education Coalition of the NHCLC, to participate in the RPLP’s  national conference, “How Science Can Strengthen the Faith of Your Church.”

The conference serves as the culminating public event for a study Dr. Elaine Howard Ecklund, the founding director of RPLP, conducted on faith and science, and for which she recently completed a book manuscript. The book, titled Why Science and Faith Need Each Other: Eight Shared Values That Move Us Beyond Fear, has been accepted for publication with Brazos Press and will be released in May 2020 immediately before the conference is to occur.

The conference aims to provide Christian leaders and constituents with empirically based, accessible social scientific evidence for how to integrate faith and science to answer questions about human purpose, meaning, and ultimate reality. Another core objective of Dr. Ecklund’s work is to bring a variety of new voices to the conversation around faith and science—men and women; black, Latino, and Asian Christians; and both pastors and lay people.

Dr. Reyes will lead a conference break-out session on engaging youth about science and Rev. Salazar will serve as emcee for the conference.

The conference, which is free and open to the public, will be held on Friday, June 5, 2020 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Rice University’s campus. Attendees will also receive a free copy of the book Why Science and Faith Need Each Other: Eight Shared Values That Move Us Beyond Fear at the conference.
