My daughter says I’m a poster child for lifelong learning. She may be right! Not only did I homeschool most of our children (they later attended a Christian and public school) but these days, as a grandmother, I’m working on an EdD in Educational Leadership. There is still much to learn, so as 2016 begins, I am still committed to loving the Lord with all my mind.
Education is important in our family (a value passed on by my mother), but that doesn’t mean it’s been easy. I encountered challenges as early as elementary school, since English was my second language. By the grace of God, I was able to learn concepts plus language development along with colloquialisms and go on to become a first generation college graduate. The Lord enabled me to beat the statistics and to consider how we can help others do the same, and there’s nothing like a new year to refresh my resolve!
We are 16 years into a new century, yet Hispanic families still see how one side of town has access to a much better educational opportunity (including college preparation) than another – we see very clearly how educational opportunity can vary from one zip code to another. Not all families have the opportunity to consider home-schooling or private school options. For this reason we must commit ourselves to not only ensuring educational equity for our own children, but for all children, including those attending public schools.
An equal education for all students is a matter of biblical justice, and our churches are just the right place to begin. I encourage church leaders and members to consider how they can support education equity for all students in the community. You can begin by asking questions: Which schools need support and involvement? How can you show the love of Christ to struggling students and their families? What do families in your neighborhood and church need in order to help their students succeed?
As this year kicks off, a simple first step for making education a topic of discussion inside your church walls is to sign up for Education Sunday. Thousands of churches participate in Education Sunday* each year on the first Sunday of September, which opens the door to year-long discussions about the value of loving the Lord with our minds. Conversations and activities can flow naturally all year long: mentoring students, helping parents understand the value of teacher meetings, offering resources for college scholarships and taking students on campus tours. Simply asking how we can support students will begin the process of improving educational outcomes in our communities.
Your congregation can creatively support education in 2016 in so many ways. Previously, our local congregation sponsored a weekly ministry calledLearning-to-Learn. Students from the church and the community received practical study tips, homework assistance, and basic etiquette skills from a volunteer faculty. The supplemental instruction of classroom skills were complimented by an introduction to basic good manners, such as table manners and the proper way to introduce themselves and others. Focusing on a holistic approach to training, encouraging, and celebrating the students’ advancement has helped them and is evidenced today by their development of useful lifelong skills.
There’s so much our churches, and we as individual Christians, can do to make a difference for students this year. We can help ensure all students have the opportunity to learn, to reach the potential God has placed in each student, and to be equipped to be college ready. Together we can help to raise the standards for all children in our communities so they can reach their God-given potential – this year and for years to come.

Mi hija dice que soy un comercial para el aprendizaje de toda la vida. Quizás tiene razón. No solo les enseñe a la mayoría de mis hijos en casa (después fueron a una escuela cristiana y publica) pero hoy en día como abuela, estoy trabajando hacia un EdD en Liderazgo Educativo. Hay mucho que aprender, y al iniciar el 2016, estoy comprometida a amar a Dios con toda mi mente.
La educación es importante para mi familia (un valor que nos dio mi mama), pero esto no quiere decir que ha sido fácil. Me enfrente a desafíos a una temprana edad en la escuela elementar, porque el inglés es mi segundo idioma. Por la gracia de Dios, pude aprender conceptos, el desarrollo del idioma junto con coloquialismos y terminar siendo la primera generación de mi familia en graduarse del colegio. El Señor me ayudo para ganarle a las estadísticas y considerar como podemos ayudar a otros para que hagan lo mismo, y no hay nada mejor que un año nuevo para reforzar ese deseo.
Hemos entrado 16 años al nuevo siglo, pero todavía familias hispanas ven como en una parte de la ciudad hay acceso a mejores oportunidades de educación (incluyendo la preparación para colegio) – vemos claramente como las oportunidades de educación varean de un código postal al otro. No todas las familias tienen la oportunidad de considerar enseñarles a sus hijos en casa o enviarlos a una escuela privada. Por esto, tenemos que comprometernos a no solo asegurar que nuestros propios hijos tengan equidad en la educación, pero que todo niño lo tenga, incluyendo los que asisten a las escuelas públicas.
Una equidad en la educación para todo niño se trata de justicia Bíblica, y nuestras iglesias son el lugar apropiado para donde empezar. Animo a todo líder eclesiástico y miembro que consideren como pueden apoyar la equidad educativa para todos los estudiantes de su comunidad. Puede empezar preguntándose lo siguiente:
¿Cuales escuelas necesitan apoyo y que nos involucremos? ¿Cómo puedes expresar el amor de Cristo a estudiantes que están luchando y a sus familias? ¿Que necesitan las familias en tu vecindario e iglesia para ayudarle a sus estudiantes lograr el éxito?
Al iniciar este año, un paso sencillo que puedes tomar en hacer la educación un tema para discusión en tu iglesia es registrarte para el domingo de la Educación. Miles de iglesias participan en el Domingo de la Educación el primer domingo de septiembre, y esto inicia una discusión de todo el año sobre el valor de amar a Dios con toda nuestra mente. Conversaciones y actividades fluyen naturalmente todo el año; la tutoría de estudiantes, ayudando a padres entender el valor de las reuniones con las maestras, ofrecer recursos para becas escolares y llevar a estudiantes a los planteles de universidades y colegios para una gira. Simplemente en preguntarnos como podemos apoyar a estudiantes iniciara el proceso de mejorar el resultado educativo en nuestras comunidades.
Su congregación puede creativamente apoyar la educación en el 2016 en muchas maneras. Anteriormente, nuestra iglesia local ofreció un ministerio semanal llamado “Aprendiendo como Aprender”. Estudiantes de la iglesia y la comunidad recibieron puntos prácticos para estudiar, ayuda con tarea, e información básica de modales de voluntarios. Esta instrucción suplementar de herramientas del salón de clase fue complementada por una introducción básica de modales, por ejemplo, modales para cenar en la mesa y la manera correcta de introducirse uno con otra persona. Enfocándose de una manera holística al entrenamiento, animando, y celebrando el avance de los estudiantes los ayudo y vemos la evidencia en los frutos hoy al mirar el desarrollo de estas lecciones para toda la vida en ellos.
